InStyle Magazine had a lot to answer for after lovers of actress Reese Witherspoon caught wind of a cover that they believed was heavily ‘retouched.’
On the cover of the “Double Fashion Issue,” Witherspoon dons a sexy black ensemble with some fashionable accessories and hair to match. Magazines are known for being quite liberal in the use of airbrushing and other editing tools, so it wasn’t a far stretch to think that someone, somewhere, had taken it upon themselves to erase all signs of aging from the “Legally Blonde” star’s face.

It didn’t take long for people to catch wind of the photo, launching some into an outrage under the belief that it didn’t represent the “real” Witherspoon:
This [email protected] not her too much photoshop love Reese for her natural and real style

“Did she approve this edit? This does not look like her,” one commenter noted.
“Unrecognizable. What did you do to this gorgeous woman,” complained another reader.
They accused the lifestyle mag of trying to make an already beautiful woman look younger than she was, though the publication denied the claims. Instead, they claimed that a combination of heavy makeup and big hair did all of the work for them. Editor-in-chief for InStyle Magazine Laura Brown stepped into the fray to explain:
“Hey team, for those commenting on retouching, the brief was super sexy, a heavy eye and big hair. You rarely see Reese like this – which was the point. We are not in the business of embalming women at InStyle Magazine. Feel free to look at Reese’s in-human-form video post, following. All the best, L.”
It would appear that the actress herself wasn’t as bothered by the cover as much as some of her fans were. Witherspoon happily shared the spread on her social media platforms, thanking the magazine.
“Oh heyy [InStyle]! Thanks for putting me on this month’s cover! HUGE thanks to the creative team and my fellow badass biz lady Gayle King, who helped me unpack The Morning Show, what it means to be a journalist today, and why women should learn to flex more!”
